Environmental firm fined for inadequate asbestos sampling

Company failed to check ceiling tiles, roofing shingles

Thandi Environmental has been fined $20,000 by WorkSafeBC.

This firm conducted a hazardous materials survey of a house and adjacent buildings in Richmond, B.C., prior to their slated demolition.

WorkSafeBC inspected the site and observed inadequate sampling of potential asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), including ceiling texture, ceiling tile, and window mastic, and no sampling of asphalt roofing shingles, another potential ACM.

The firm failed to ensure the collection of representative samples of all potentially hazardous materials, a repeated violation.
