From battery life to voice-activated safety forms, meet the vendors rated Canada’s best safety suppliers this year
A dead battery at a confined space entry point isn’t an inconvenience. It’s the difference between a shift that ends safely and one that doesn’t. That’s the reality behind Canadian Occupational Safety’s 11th annual Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Safety Suppliers, a reader-voted survey that ran from May 11 to June 5, 2026, asking Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) professionals across the country which vendors and suppliers actually hold up when it matters.
The stakes behind that vote aren’t abstract: Canadian workers’ compensation boards recorded 1,042 work-related deaths in 2024, according to the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada’s national work injury and fatality statistics program, with seven of 11 jurisdictions seeing their injury fatality rate climb above the 2021–23 average.
For the first time, occupational disease deaths outnumber traumatic fatalities in most Canadian jurisdictions.
This year’s four featured winners didn’t earn their votes with a longer feature list or a louder pitch. Gas Clip Technologies, BIS Safety Software, Brady Canada, and DriveWise compete in four entirely different categories but each built its edge the same way: by finding the one failure that keeps quietly costing workers their safety, and refusing to accept it as the cost of doing business.
Reader-voted awards carry a weight vendor marketing never will. These aren’t rankings bought with a slick pitch deck – they’re votes cast by the safety officers, technicians and coordinators who’ve actually staked their compliance, their budget, or their team’s safety on the product working, a track record visible in past winners of the Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Safety Suppliers going back over a decade.
And adoption of new safety technology in Canada is nowhere near where it needs to be. When last measured in 2024, a survey of 810 occupational health and safety professionals across Ontario and British Columbia, conducted by the Institute for Work & Health’s study on AI adoption in Canadian workplace safety, found that nearly a third had organizations using AI for OHS purposes. That’s well behind the broader Canadian business trend: AI adoption across all sectors has since tripled to 19.2 percent by the second quarter of 2026, according to Statistics Canada’s analysis of AI use by Canadian businesses. Most of the safety industry is still standing still. That’s exactly what makes this year’s four winners worth paying attention to: they’re not running pilot projects or waiting to see what sticks. They’ve already shipped tools that are changing outcomes on real worksites.

None of them got there by adding features. Each found one specific failure – a dead battery at the fence line, a paperwork bottleneck in freezing conditions, an outdated laminated sign nobody trusts, a driver who thinks 20 years behind the wheel means nothing left to learn – and refused to let it slide.
That distinction between solving a problem completely and simply selling around one isn’t just this report’s editorial thesis – it’s what actual procurement experts are telling Canadian safety buyers to look for. Sabesh Kanagaretnam, president and co-founder of 4S Consulting Services, based in Markham, ON, works directly with organizations navigating exactly this kind of purchasing decision.
Determining genuine value in an increasingly crowded market is one of the biggest challenges Canadian employers face, Kanagaretnam says. With more information, products, and services available than ever, it can be difficult to distinguish solutions that genuinely address a workplace’s needs from those that simply offer the lowest upfront cost. Increasingly, suppliers need to demonstrate credibility and measurable value, he says – moving beyond simply delivering a product, service, or training program to demonstrating effectiveness through outcomes, whether that’s improved compliance, reduced injuries, stronger safety performance, or greater operational efficiency.
Kanagaretnam explains, “A lower-cost solution that creates additional work or does not fit the organization’s needs can ultimately be far more expensive than a solution with a higher initial price that delivers sustained value.”
Employers have access to more information, products and services than ever, but that can make it difficult to distinguish between solutions that genuinely address their needs and those that simply offer the lowest upfront cost. This is compounded by differences in regulatory requirements across Canadian jurisdictions – employers need solutions that fit not only their operations, but the specific environment in which they operate.
The shift toward technology-enabled safety is creating opportunities to move from reactive safety management toward more predictive approaches. Smart systems can analyze historical data and identify patterns in when, where, and under what circumstances incidents are more likely to occur. But adopting technology should not be about technology for its own sake – buyers need to assess the long-term value and effectiveness of a solution rather than focusing solely on convenience or purchase price.
The focus should ultimately be on value rather than price alone. Safety professionals should consider a supplier’s reputation, quality, reliability, guarantees or ongoing support, adaptability to the organization’s specific requirements, and, where technology is involved, security.

At the fence line of a confined space, there’s no negotiating. Hard hat, high-vis vest, functioning gas detector – miss one, and work doesn’t start. That’s the exact moment Gas Clip Technologies has built its entire company around.
“Our biggest differentiator is our battery life,” says Casey Lewis, who leads customer-facing work at the Texas-based manufacturer. Not a marginal edge – a two-to-three-year runtime with zero charging, powered by an infrared sensor that sips power where competitors’ units gulp it. The Canadian workhorse, the rechargeable MGC, carries a conservative two-month spec-sheet rating; field data from Canadian users routinely stretches that closer to a year.

The stakes in this category are unusually high, as detailed in our recent coverage of confined space entry regulations across Canadian provinces. WorkSafeBC estimates that an average of 100 confined space fatalities occur across Canadian workplaces each year, and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety’s guidance on confined space hazards notes that an estimated 60 percent of those fatalities occur among would-be rescuers – colleagues who go in after a coworker without proper training or equipment, turning one tragedy into two. A gas detector that’s dead on arrival isn’t a minor inconvenience in that context. It’s how the second body ends up in the same confined space as the first.
That’s the failure Gas Clip refuses to let slide. “You’ve got guys showing up to work, the battery’s dead. You can’t work. You’re not supposed to work,” Lewis says. It’s a failure so routine that the industry has quietly stopped calling it a failure at all. “So many people have gotten used to that problem,” Lewis says. “We almost have to have a conversation to go back and be like, ‘Hey, you don’t have to accept that as a problem anymore.’”
Reliability this good creates its own trap: complacency. If a device never seems to need attention, workers stop giving it any. Gas Clip’s answer is a configurable “activity blink” – a passive pulse that proves the unit is alive and working, giving supervisors a compliance check without a single extra step.


Growth in the category has tracked with rising regulatory pressure, Lewis says, particularly around the company’s confined-space-specific pump model, now spreading beyond its traditional oil-and-gas base into utilities and underground work. But the company faces a fork in the road: chase the industry’s drift toward connected, app-driven devices, or protect the exact thing that’s winning it awards.
Lewis says, “It becomes obviously more difficult to maintain that really strong battery life when you add sensors that are eating up battery life, when you add connectivity,” a trade-off the company isn’t rushing into.
I would say it’s several hundred percent ahead. A good run on a competitor’s four-gas unit may be 25 hours. Our Simple Plus is three years.
That is a conversation we’ve had. A lot of people still don’t take safety as seriously as they should, so we have a lot of different things set up within the unit to help with that.
A big driver of our industry is regulations. People are taking things more seriously, and we’ve got a pump model specifically designed for confined space that’s been our biggest grower in sales over the last 12 months.

Standardized, simulator-based training delivered coast to coast – the same quality of instruction whether a fleet's driver trains in Halifax or Prince George
Ask Lesley de Repentigny, president of DriveWise, what makes the company different and one word does most of the work: standardized. Not “good in most locations.” Not “consistent where it counts.” Every single client, everywhere in the country, gets the identical program. “No matter where they’re sending their employee, they’re going to get the same quality of training,” she says. “It’s not, well, they went to Bob’s driving school here or Jim’s trucking company here.”
The risk this is built to shrink isn’t theoretical. Of the 1,964 road fatalities recorded in Canada in 2023, 399 – just over one in five – involved a commercial motor vehicle, according to Transport Canada’s National Collision Database. And training quality is a documented factor, not a hunch: Insurance Bureau of Canada’s report on commercial truck driver training standards, commissioned from MNP LLP, found that new commercial truck drivers who haven’t received adequate training pose a greater danger on Canadian roads, with less-trained drivers more likely to crash and more likely to generate costly claims when they do.
Enforcing one standard across a country this size takes more than a mission statement. Every training school in DriveWise’s network feeds data back to head office and getting in requires clearing a genuinely rigid screening process.
“If they’re not making the standard, they get a chance to be retrained or they get the boot,” de Repentigny says – no quiet grandfathering, no exceptions for tenure.
The simulator training is where the company gets to do something no live vehicle ever could: let a bad decision play all the way out. Built from real collision data – road friction, weather, sun glare, the exact causal chain of an actual crash – the simulator lets a trainee watch their own mistake unfold instead of being rescued from it, exposing whether they catch and correct the error themselves or let it spiral. For fire, police, and emergency medical services (EMS) trainees, it recreates acute-stress scenarios too dangerous to stage for real. Distraction training is blunter still: put people on the simulator and have them text while driving. They crash 85–90 percent of the time. “I thought I was driving straight,” trainees tell her afterward. “Nope, you weren’t,” is her reply.


De Repentigny’s own background – a former military air traffic controller – gives her a head start on spotting a risk most of the industry hasn’t caught up to yet: skill fade, the erosion of manual competency that comes from overreliance on automation. “I think we’re going to face the same thing in this industry, and you can already see it,” she says. Driver-assist tech performs badly in Canadian winter, which means a driver who’s outsourced their instincts to a sensor is one snowstorm away from finding out the hard way.
The numbers back the approach up. Client fleets see an average 20 percent drop in incident rates after training, de Repentigny says – over 50 percent for fleets that were genuinely broken before DriveWise got involved. The techniques also cut hard braking and aggressive acceleration, which means fuel savings ride along for free. Demand is shifting now toward electric vehicle (EV) safety training and winter-conditions instruction for new Canadian truckers navigating snow for the first time – driven partly by a national push toward east-west trade corridors that reduce dependence on routes south of the border.
DriveWise client fleets see measurable incident-rate reductions, and the effect is largest where the need was greatest.
The company operates under two related brands, de Repentigny explains: DriveWise trains fleet employees who already hold a licence, while its sister company, Knowledge Surge – a private career college – handles licence upgrades and instructor training, work that requires a separate regulatory framework in Ontario. “If you have your license and you’re working for a fleet, you’re going to DriveWise,” she says.
We’re getting more and more requests for training for electric vehicles. On the trucking side, it’s mostly to verify – as we have a real bad problem in Canada right now with subpar trucking schools.
One of the biggest things we faced with autopilot was skill fade – people becoming overly reliant on technology. For example, if you only learn how to back up using cameras, you’re not learning how to back up correctly.
When they tell me, I was able to avoid a really nasty collision because of what I’d learned on your program, that’s the greatest feeling.

Voice-driven hazard assessments that write themselves – built for workers in the cold, in gloves, with numb fingers and a phone screen that doesn't want to cooperate
Two years ago, digitizing a paper form meant copying fields one by one, question by question, into an app by hand. That process doesn’t exist anymore at BIS Safety Software – and CEO Dan MacDonald isn’t shy about framing that as a line in the sand, not a software update.
“Everything’s got to be changed. We can’t do the old way anymore, that’s gone,” MacDonald says of the past two years, describing a period of aggressive AI integration across both the company’s internal operations and its client-facing platform.
The clearest proof is a voice-driven hazard assessment tool built for the people traditional forms have always failed hardest: workers in the cold, in gloves, with numb fingers and a phone screen that doesn’t want to cooperate.
“They hit a button and it says in the earbuds, ‘Hey, it looks like you’re filling out a hazard assessment form. Tell me what happened,’” MacDonald explains. The AI runs the interview, populates the form live, and hands it back for a final check – no typos, no rushed shorthand, considerably more detail than a worker would ever type manually. MacDonald estimates the tool saves more than 70 percent of form-completion time – on a 500-person worksite doing eight or nine forms a day, he puts that at roughly $7 million in payroll no longer lost to paperwork.


Getting there wasn’t a matter of flipping a switch. MacDonald is candid that the hardest part was behavioural, not technical – the company hired two dedicated AI adoption specialists whose entire job was auditing team workflows and building solutions alongside staff, not handing down mandates from above. Employees who leaned in – some building their own AI tools on their own time – got raises and recognition for it. The payoff: the company scaled without needing to backfill every role that walked out the door.
MacDonald doesn’t pretend the market is impressed anymore. “It’s now expected. It’s like it’s about time and almost ‘Okay, thanks for catching up,’” he says. That’s the pressure pushing BIS toward its next bet: agentic AI, where the platform stops answering questions and starts doing the work – importing a spreadsheet, building a form, adding a user without being walked through it. MacDonald expects the first agentic features to ship within the year, with full build-out taking roughly another.
It interviews them like a safety officer.
We got to get so far ahead. We’ve got to be like Netflix, so if we were to get turned off, there’s going to be a lot of angry people.
We hired two AI adoption specialists who sat down with everybody on the team and said, ‘Show me what you do in your day,’ then taught them a better way to do it. Some people started taking projects home on the weekends just to build things and show us what AI could do. We gave those people raises and celebrated the wins. It’s a big team effort and everything the team has accomplished is kudos to them.

One hundred and ten years in business and nearly 70 of them in Canada. That’s not a nostalgia point for Brady’s Jamie Button – it’s the entire argument. “Mitigating risk, avoiding accidents, and being on the good side of provincial inspectors,” he says, describing exactly what buyers in this category actually care about, once you strip away the sales language.
Brady didn’t win once this year – it won twice, taking both Lockout/Tagout & Machine Guarding and Signage & Identification. That double win isn’t a coincidence; it’s the same discipline showing up in two places. The categories it dominates are not minor ones. In Saskatchewan alone, machinery contact injuries were the second-leading cause of workplace injury claims between 2010 and 2022, with 5,174 injuries recorded in 2022 alone, according to WorkSafeSask, the province’s workplace safety authority. Machine-related incidents injure close to 1,800 Ontario workers every year, according to Workplace Safety & Prevention Services. It’s a missing finger, or worse. And the signage side carries its own quiet risk: a laminated sign nobody’s updated in years is a liability dressed up as a safety measure.
Brady’s answer is a full-solution model – personal protective equipment, lockout devices, signage, software, field engineering – all under one roof, cutting down how many vendors a safety manager needs to chase down when something’s wrong.
One of the sharper moves is almost embarrassingly simple: a QR code where a laminated sign used to be. Scan it, get the current PDF procedure on your phone – and when the procedure changes, the code doesn’t. “If they do any updates to the procedures, the QR code stays the same. You don’t have to replace the document and go around and update all the placarding in the plant,” Button explains. No more outdated signage lying to workers about what the current procedure actually is. The push tracks a real shift on the floor, and he notes: “Now you got young people coming up into trades and they’re very comfortable, in fact prefer to work off of devices.”
Brady’s field engineering team – engineers who build lockout, arc flash, and confined space procedures on-site, not from a manual – has expanded fast over the last three to four years, a real pivot for a company built on hardware. The company also doesn’t wait for regulation to force its hand: when Canada shifted from the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System to the Globally Harmonized System of labelling, Button says Brady had compliant products ready before the deadline, not scrambling after it. He credits that instinct with recent market share gains, with repeated Readers’ Choice wins as the external proof. New products, he says, are coming within the next 12 months.


It’s a real strong sales enablement tool for our team to use. I use it probably daily – as a baseline, to quickly analyze a document or a website. We don’t rely on it, and it’s not 100 percent accurate, but it’s really efficient.
We spend a lot of money on R&D, listening to what customers say, but also using our own product expertise to direct people – rather than just trying to sell more of something that’s already antiquated.
It’s real opinions. The fact that we’ve got that brand recognition out there in these categories speaks to our efforts over the years to be leaders in these product areas, and in the industry.
AI is done being a differentiator. It’s table stakes now – BIS Safety Software’s Dan MacDonald describes the market’s reaction to features that would have looked like innovation two years ago as a shrug of expectation rather than surprise. The real fight isn’t whether to adopt new technology, it’s what you do with it once everyone else has caught up too. DriveWise is pointing AI at research and scenario-building; BIS is pushing toward agentic tools that stop answering questions and start doing the work.
Canada still has a long way to go before that’s the norm rather than the exception – when the Institute for Work & Health last measured it in 2024, adoption was still concentrated among larger, higher-hazard organizations, which means most Canadian employers are watching from the sidelines while their risk exposure doesn’t wait for them to catch up.
But here’s what separates this year’s winners from a company that’s simply chasing the AI headline: not one of them let new technology replace the thing that made them good in the first place. Gas Clip won’t trade battery life for a connectivity feature just because competitors are doing it. Brady didn’t ditch three decades of regulatory tracking the moment software got interesting. The next 12–24 months will separate vendors who use technology to solve their core problem more completely from vendors who bolt on a feature and hope nobody notices the fundamentals slipping.
What defines a Readers’ Choice winner from every other vendor chasing the same customers isn’t ambition. It’s restraint. These companies didn’t win by trying to do everything – they won by refusing to stop until one specific thing was done completely. That’s a harder discipline than it sounds, and it’s rarer than the industry likes to admit.
Most vendors treat their core product as a solved problem the moment it ships, then spend every year after chasing the next feature to stay competitive. The companies recognized here did the opposite. They treated their core problem as never fully solved – worth returning to, refining, and defending, year after year, even as the market pushed them toward something flashier. That’s not a marketing position. It’s an operating principle, and it shows up in how each of these companies talks about its own roadmap: not in terms of what’s new, but in terms of what’s finally, permanently fixed.
That discipline is also what makes reader-voted recognition meaningful in a way self-reported case studies never are. A vendor can claim anything about its own product. It can’t manufacture a voting base of safety professionals choosing it, unprompted, over every competitor in its category. The winners recognized here earned that vote because the people using their products every day noticed the difference between a company solving a problem and a company selling around one.
