2 Ontario MTO workers injured in highway collision

Two Ontario workers went on the scene to attend to a vehicular collision, only to end up as victims of another crash this Sunday morning.

Two workers working on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) were injured – one of them, critically – while at work on Highway 400 southbound and 5th Line in Bradford, Ont.

They were standing outside of a "blocker truck" to divert traffic for a separate collision.

At around 7 am, they were then hit by a driver, according to police.

"A passenger vehicle entered into the road closure of a collision scene," Ontario Provincial Police said in a post on X, according to a CBC report.

The vehicle struck one of the worker's trucks on scene, according to the report.

Previously, tow truck driver Cory Armstrong narrowly escaped death while helping a stranded motorist on the side of Highway 833 north of Camrose, AB.

The two workers injured in the Ontario incident were employed by a company contracted to do work for MTO.

The two workers were taken to a trauma centre. While both had serious injuries, one was in stable condition by Sunday afternoon while the other was in life-threatening condition.

ORNGE air ambulance transported one of the workers, a woman in her 20s to a trauma centre, around 7:45 a.m, CP24 reported. The gender and age of the other worker is still not known.

Meanwhile, the driver and passenger in the other vehicle involved in the incident were also taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

Highway 400 southbound was closed from highways 88 to 8 (Canal Road) for several hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.

Previously, the United Steelworkers union, representing traffic signallers, demanded increased protection for road workers after two separate hit-and-run incidents at construction sites in Montreal left road workers injured and one dead.

In Canada in 2020, there were 1,745 motor vehicle fatalities and 7,868 serious injuries, according to a previous report.
