Nominations are closing on May 8
Organisations hoping to be recognised among Canada’s safety leaders have just days left to act, with nominations for the 2026 Canada’s Safest Employers Awards closing on May 8, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
Employers are being urged to submit their entries now or risk missing out on national recognition for their health and safety achievements over the past year.
Submitting a nomination is free. The program is designed so that companies can focus on the strength of their safety outcomes rather than the size of their budgets, making it accessible to both large enterprises and smaller employers.
What does the Canada’s Safest Employers Awards recognise?
Canada’s Safest Employers Awards spotlight organisations that demonstrate leadership, innovation and measurable results in protecting workers. The long-running program spans a wide range of sectors and disciplines, honouring excellence in areas such as safety management systems, training, mental health and return-to-work strategies.
An independent panel of judges reviews the entries, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based improvements and sustained performance. Nominees are expected to show not only that policies exist on paper, but that they translate into tangible reductions in risk, incidents and injuries.
The nomination process is designed to focus on concrete achievements rather than presentation gloss. Organisations are asked to outline their safety policies, incident trends, prevention initiatives and worker engagement efforts, providing real-world examples of how they have strengthened safety culture and reduced risk over the past 12 months.
After nominations close on May 8, shortlisted organisations will be invited to provide more detailed submissions. These follow-up entries will delve deeper into safety frameworks, targets and performance metrics, allowing judges to compare approaches across industries and regions.
The process is reinforced by employee perception surveys, which help assess how safety is actually lived on the front lines. Judges use these insights to gauge whether formal programs are genuinely understood, trusted and used by workers, rather than simply existing as policies.
Spotlight on The Bruce Power Award for Canada’s Safest New Employer
Among the categories set to attract particular interest again this year is The Bruce Power Award for Canada’s Safest New Employer. This award recognises organisations that are relatively new to the Canadian market, or that have recently launched operations, but have already embedded robust safety practices into their business.
The category is designed to shine a light on emerging employers that view safety as a strategic priority from day one. These organisations are often building governance, training and prevention measures from the ground up, integrating safety into their culture and operations rather than retrofitting it later.
In 2025, the award went to Bora Pharmaceutical Services Inc. The company’s win underscored how rapidly growing firms can still design and implement sophisticated safety systems early in their life cycle, demonstrating that newer entrants can match – and sometimes surpass – more established players when safety is treated as a core value rather than a compliance obligation.
Key dates and the road to COS Live
For the 2026 program, excellence awardees across all categories will be announced in July, following the judges’ review of the extended submissions and survey data. This stage highlights the organisations that have distinguished themselves as leaders in their respective fields.
Category winners will then be revealed live at a gala in October, as part of COS Live, a new two-day event that brings together the Canada’s Safest Employers Awards with the Women in Safety Summit and the Canadian Safety Summit. The combined format is intended to create a richer, more connected experience for attendees.
By linking the awards gala with conferences focused on leadership, diversity and broader safety strategy, COS Live aims to provide a national forum for safety professionals, executives and policymakers.
