Drivers across Québec are being urged to slow down and stay alert in construction zones during National Road Workers Safety Awareness Week 2026
Québec is marking National Road Workers Safety Awareness Week from June 8 to 14, 2026 as roadwork activity increases across the province with the return of warmer weather.
The annual campaign is intended to remind drivers of the risks faced by road workers and to encourage safer behaviour in construction zones. Roadwork sites across Québec involve active traffic, heavy equipment, work crews and, in some cases, pedestrians and cyclists. These create conditions where a lapse in driver attention can have serious consequences.
According to the campaign message, road workers remain exposed to significant hazards despite existing safety measures and posted signage. Reduced visibility, heavy traffic, excessive speed and driver distraction continue to contribute to risk in work zones. Officials say workers rely on road users to remain alert and follow instructions to help prevent injuries.
What drivers are being asked to do
The campaign urges drivers to slow down, respect posted limits and follow all signage when approaching construction areas.
Other recommended actions include:
- maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
- avoiding distractions while driving
- allowing extra travel time
- obeying directions from traffic control personnel
How the campaign is reaching Québec road users
This year’s theme, La protection des travailleurs routiers, j’embarque, is being used to support a range of public awareness activities across Québec. These include:
- video testimonials from road workers describing close calls and serious incidents
- new En zone orange podcast episodes on enforcement operations and photo radar
- virtual reality activities at rest areas highlighting risks faced by road supervisors
The campaign is being led through a partnership involving these agencies:
- Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable
- Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ)
- Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST)
- Sûreté du Québec
- Association des directeurs de police du Québec
- Syndicat de la fonction publique et parapublique du Québec
- Ministère de la Sécurité intérieure
Organizers say the aim is to reinforce prevention efforts and reach the public in all regions of Québec. The message to drivers is to slow down, stay attentive and respect roadwork signage throughout the week and year-round.
