Regina firm penalized for safety lapse

Brandt Industries Canada Ltd. has been fined $55,000 following a 2021 workplace incident in which a worker was seriously injured while operating a forklift without proper training, according to CTV News.

The Saskatchewan Provincial Court handed down the penalty on Oct. 27 after finding the company guilty of violating occupational health and safety regulations. The violation involved failing to “ensure that only trained operators are required or permitted to operate mobile equipment,” the province’s Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety said.

The fine includes a $39,286.71 penalty and a $15,713.29 surcharge, totalling $55,000.

The charges stem from a Sept. 2, 2021 incident at a Brandt Industries facility in Regina, where a worker suffered serious injuries while operating a forklift.

According to court records, Brandt Industries was convicted of one count under Saskatchewan’s occupational health and safety laws for not ensuring workers were adequately trained before using mobile equipment.
