Requirements issued to constructor after four workers hurt

Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development issued three requirements to York Developments (London) Inc, after four workers were hurt in a partial floor collapse at a high-rise construction project in London, Ontario.

The workers were taken to hospital and the ministry says they sustained “minor injuries.”

The ministry is continuing to investigate the incident which happened just after noon on Thursday at 131 King Street, in the city’s downtown core.

London Fire Department platoon chief manager, Gary Mossburger, tells Canadian Occupational Safety work was being done on the 26th story at the time of the incident.

“It appears that something occurred resulting in a partial collapse injuring individuals in the area that were working on those upper floors.”

York Developments is the constructor, while EllisDon is the employer, for the 266-unit luxury apartment building project. York Developments issued a statement saying the incident happened “during a concrete pour by our concrete formwork subcontractor.”

The statement goes on to say the company is thankful nobody was seriously hurt, “and we are now in the process of gathering further information. Worker and public safety are at the core of our business, and we will be conducting an internal review alongside EllisDon to ensure compliance with our mandated safety protocols.”

Mossburger says a construction elevator only went as high at the 19th floor, “so we ended up having to carry down a number of individuals from the upper floors, down to the 19th and get them down to two awaiting ambulances for transport to hospital.”

He said it was reminiscent of a more serious incident in the city in December 2020 when two workers were killed and five others were injured when the fourth floor of a construction site collapsed with 40 workers inside the building.
