Reports indicate worker was seriously injured, raising questions

Worker hospitalized after incident at Toronto skyscraper project

A construction worker was rushed to hospital with serious, “life-altering” injuries following an incident at the site of a downtown Toronto highrise Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded just before 1 pm to 1 Bloor West, the future site of an 87-storey skyscraper at the busy Yonge and Bloor intersection. Toronto Fire said they received a call about an injured worker and initially had difficulty reaching him. Officials later confirmed that a work platform fell from the 67th floor to the level below.

Toronto Paramedic Services told CTV News that one man was taken to a trauma centre from the scene. He was described as having sustained serious, “life-altering” injuries. Authorities have not released details about how the incident happened.

The Ministry of Labour has since launched an investigation.

Tridel, the project’s current developer, confirmed that a worker was taken to hospital following the incident.

“We are relieved to confirm the individual was responsive at the time, and our thoughts are with them and their loved ones as they focus on recovery,” Tridel said in a written statement provided to CP24.

The company added that “the safety and well-being of our employees, tradespeople, and everyone on our sites is our highest priority.” It noted that safety protocols were in place at the time and said it would “cooperate fully with all investigating authorities” while also initiating an independent review to determine what happened.

Mizrahi Developments, which was previously attached to the project, also expressed concern.

“We were saddened to hear about the incident onsite at The One, via the media, this afternoon. We hope the worker makes a full recovery,” said president Sam Mizrahi in a statement.

Mizrahi noted the company has had no involvement in day-to-day operations since March 2024, when it stepped away as general contractor.
