Worker killed by heavy vehicle in Ottawa

One man was killed by a heavy vehicle at a work site in Ottawa’s east-end Industrial Park on Wednesday evening, according to a report.

Paramedics received a call at approximately 6:30 p.m. about a man trapped under a vehicle near the 2400 block of Sheffield Road, between Innes and Walkley roads.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, reported CBC.

By Thursday morning, two Ministry of Labour vehicles, police cruisers, and a fire truck were seen at a Cascades facility on Sheffield Road. “A ministry inspector has been assigned to investigate,” a ministry spokesperson told CBC News by email. “As the investigation is ongoing, no further details can be provided at this time” .

Cascades, a packaging, hygiene, and collection company headquartered in Kingsley Falls, Quebec, confirmed the deceased was not a Cascades employee but a contractor from an external firm hired for maintenance and repair work. Hugo D’Amours, vice-president of communications for Cascades, told CBC the man “had been working on a piece of equipment at the time of the incident.” A Cascades employee found him and called 911.

While paramedics initially reported the victim had been crushed by a forklift, D’Amours clarified to CBC that the injuries were actually caused by a Bobcat machine. D’Amours said Cascades will “fully collaborate” with the ministry’s investigation.
