American Plant Maintenance urges winter steam system checks

American Plant Maintenance (APM Steam) is urging facilities to prepare their steam systems for winter by conducting steam trap surveys that can reduce safety risks, improve reliability and cut energy losses.

APM Steam technicians use ultrasound and temperature differentials to test each trap and document its condition, while also assessing surrounding components such as isolation valves, strainers, check valves, bypasses and sight glasses. The resulting report identifies failed or leaking traps, trap application problems and trap station issues that can compromise safe condensate removal and expose workers to live steam during maintenance.

Each trap is tagged and logged with location, operating conditions and access notes to support safe repair planning and avoid unnecessary shutdowns. APM Steam says many facilities recover the cost of surveys and repairs in less than a year and recommends scheduling work before holiday staffing constraints and year-end incentive deadlines.
