Saskatchewan employer charged over worker’s death
The company was fined $125,000 plus a surcharge of $50,000 on each count.

Saskatchewan company B L S Asphalt Inc. was fined a total of $350,000 after being found guilty of two violations under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996.

The charges stem from a Nov. 22, 2017, incident, when a worker at the facility near Ceylon got entangled in a conveyor while clearing the chute of the conveyor system. 

The employer was found guilty of contravening clause 12(c) of the regulations , or being, an employer, failing to provide any information, instruction, training and supervision that is necessary to protect the health and safety of workers at work, resulting in the death of a worker.

It also violated clause 137(1)(a) of the regulations or, being an employer, failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine, resulting in the death of a worker.

One additional charge was dismissed in court.

The company was fined $125,000 plus a surcharge of $50,000 on each count.  

“Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, in partnership with the Workers' Compensation Board, supports and promotes Mission: Zero - zero workplace injuries, zero fatalities and zero suffering,” according to the Saskatchewan government.

Saskatchewan company Aallcann Wood Suppliers Inc. was fined $57,143, along with a surcharge of $22,857, after a worker was injured after getting caught in the chain drive while cleaning a conveyor.
