Worker struck by a projectile while disassembling oilfield drilling equipment

Alberta employer TAQA Drilling Solutions Inc. has been fined $126,000 following an incident that caused serious injuries to a worker.
The incident took place on March 23, 2022, at a work site in Edmonton. The worker was disassembling oilfield drilling equipment when they were struck by a projectile, causing serious injuries.
On June 4, TAQA Drilling Solutions pleaded guilty to one count under occupational health and safety (OHS) laws in the Edmonton Court of Justice.
“The company, as an employer, pleaded guilty to one count under the OHS Code for failing to provide safeguards if a worker could come into contact with objects thrown by machinery or equipment,” said the Alberta government.
Under a creative sentence, the company was ordered to pay $126,000 to the Glenrose Hospital Foundation for neuromodulation research at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.
The OHS Act provides a creative sentence option in which funds that would otherwise be paid as fines are directed to an organisation or project to improve or promote workplace health and safety.
The Crown withdrew eight other counts.
Both the company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalties.
Safe disassembly of a drilling machine
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) provides comprehensive guidelines for working with power tools, including drills, which can be adapted for safe disassembly. These include:
- Wear safety glasses or a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles).
- Keep drill air vents clear to maintain adequate ventilation.
- Inspect for frays or damage before each use.
- Keep all cords clear of the cutting area during use.
- Disconnect the power supply before changing or adjusting bits or attachments.
