Rental company fined following workplace injury

J & H Rentals Ltd., a rental company based in Kindersley has been fined following a workplace injury that had occurred in January 2022.

After pleading guilty in the Kindersley Provincial Court last January 30, 2024 regarding a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, the rental company is set to pay a fine worth $24,000.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety found that a worker was injured after they fell through an opening on a work platform in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on January 13, 2022.

The ministry further said that the company contravened a clause within the regulations that required the firm to cover any opening or hole in a floor or any other work surface where a worker may potentially step on or fall with a covering that is able to support a load of 360 kilograms per square metre. The regulation also entailed that there must be a warning sign or permanent marking that will clearly state the nature of the hazard.

Following the rental company’s guilty plea, the court levied a fine of $17,142.86 with a surcharge of $6,857.14 while three other charges were stayed.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety works with employers and employees in order to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses through education, inspections, and prosecutions.
