Tow truck drivers face 21 charges after altercation at Cambridge collision scene

Two tow truck drivers in Ontario are facing a total of 21 charges following a collision on Thursday.

The incident occurred at around 2:15 p.m. in Cambridge. Waterloo Regional Police officers responded to multiple calls regarding a collision on Franklin Boulevard near Mill Creek Road. Upon arrival, police found the northbound lanes blocked by several tow trucks, with two drivers engaged in a physical confrontation.

The scene attracted numerous other tow truck drivers, according to police.

“Through investigation, it was determined that neither of the involved drivers had requested tow services. Despite this, seven tow trucks from four separate towing companies had responded to the scene without being contacted by either the involved parties or police,” police said.

The Waterloo Regional Police stated that the tow truck drivers were charged under the Highway Traffic Act and the Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act (TSSEA). They also found that one truck was unsafe, and that vehicle was taken out of service.

“The Waterloo Regional Police would like to remind the public that tow truck drivers and companies are not permitted to attend collision scenes or solicit business unless they have been requested by the involved parties or police, in accordance with regulations under the Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act (TSSEA),” said police.
