Two Calgary workers honoured for leveraging Dragonfly tool to improve workplace safety

Two Amazon employees working at Calgary fulfillment centers have been recognized for their proactive contributions to workplace safety, using a company tool known as Dragonfly. This tool, accessible at on-site kiosks and employees' devices, allows frontline workers to submit safety suggestions based on their daily experiences, which can then be reviewed and potentially implemented.
Dragonfly: A platform for employee-driven safety
Amazon has invested over $2 billion in safety initiatives since 2019, including technology solutions designed to enhance workplace safety. Dragonfly is a key part of this effort, enabling employees worldwide to submit safety improvement ideas in real-time. In 2024 alone, more than 130,000 Amazon employees globally used the tool, proposing solutions ranging from minor adjustments, like repositioning equipment, to complex safety measures, such as installing laser motion sensors for forklift safety.
Preventing slips and falls: Jennifer E.’s initiative
Jennifer E., an employee at Amazon’s YYC4 robotics fulfillment center in Calgary, was recognized for her solution to prevent slip hazards caused by thawing shipments. During Calgary’s winter months, some products arrive at the center frozen or snow-covered. As these items thaw, they can create puddles, increasing the risk of slips for employees.
Jennifer identified the hazard and submitted a solution through Dragonfly. Her suggestion led to the implementation of a designated storage area for frozen products, away from employee pathways, and the use of specialized spillage pallets to capture melting water.
“I am so happy to see the positive impact that my idea is having on the safety of my colleagues. It was motivating to see my Dragonfly submission actioned by my manager, and I am now encouraging my colleagues to submit their own ideas,” Jennifer said.
Enhancing pedestrian safety: Alyssa M.’s contribution
At Amazon’s YYC1 fulfillment center in Balzac, Alyssa M. proposed an improvement aimed at reducing the risk of collisions between employees. She identified blind spots where employees pushing carts might not see incoming pedestrian traffic.
After submitting her observation via Dragonfly, Amazon’s site leadership installed spherical mirrors in low-visibility areas. These mirrors have improved visibility, helping employees avoid collisions. Alyssa’s contributions were recognized by senior Amazon leadership.
Employee-driven safety as a core value
These stories demonstrate Amazon's focus on employee-driven safety solutions. Through Dragonfly, employees at all levels are empowered to make a positive impact on workplace safety, transforming everyday observations into actionable improvements.
