Authorities are investigating an incident that left one Air Canada worker injured in the workplace.

An Air Canada ground employee was injured during de-icing operations at Charlottetown Airport on March 30 when a de-icing vehicle came into contact with an aircraft preparing for departure.

The incident took place early Monday morning as an Air Canada Airbus A220-300 was being prepared for a scheduled flight from Charlottetown to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

While the aircraft was on the ground, a collision occurred between the de-icing truck and the aircraft, according to a CBC report.

‘Extremely rare’ event

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has confirmed that it is collecting information about the occurrence at Charlottetown Airport, according to the article. The case involves a commercial passenger operation and ground handling activity in the de-icing area.

Charlottetown Airport Authority CEO Doug Newson said emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following the collision. The worker was taken to hospital after receiving assistance on site.

The extent of the worker’s injuries has not been made public. No additional details about the employee’s condition or treatment have been released.

Air Canada also said the incident is under review. The company noted that events of this type are “extremely rare,” characterising the collision as an unusual occurrence in its operations, according to the CBC report.

Air Canada has seen a lot of controversy in recent weeks..

Recently, Air Canada announced that its chief executive Michael Rousseau will step down next year, closing a turbulent chapter for the carrier as it faces renewed scrutiny over whether its top leaders reflect Canada’s official languages and cultural expectations in moments of crisis.

The announcement came after a fatal runway collision involving an Air Canada Express jet at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Following that incident, Rousseau was summoned to appear before a House of Commons committee after delivering a condolence message about the fatal crash almost entirely in English.

Also, one of the airline’s employees was charged after an investigation into an alleged attempt to export approximately 66 kilograms of cannabis from Toronto Pearson International Airport, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
