Inquest into Toronto construction site falls

An inquest has been scheduled into the cases of William Bruin, William Maguire, and Norman Gerrard. It will begin Monday, February 5, 2024.

The stories of these three men, Mr. Bruin, 33, who passed away on September 15, 2017; Mr. Maguire, 60, who lost his life on March 27, 2018; and Mr. Gerrard, 48, who met his unfortunate fate on March 20, 2019, share a heartbreaking similarity. Each of them suffered fatal injuries resulting from falls from heights while diligently working at different construction sites in the city of Toronto.

According to the Coroners Act, an inquest into their deaths is a mandatory. The goal is not only to find answers but also to explore whether lessons can be drawn from their deaths to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This inquest is set to be a ten-day affair, with approximately eight witnesses expected to share their testimonies. Presiding over the proceedings will be Bonnie Goldberg, who will guide the jury through the examination of the circumstances surrounding these heart-wrenching incidents.

The inquest will be conducted via video conference. This format will provide accessibility to a broader audience, allowing members of the public to follow the proceedings live through this link.
