One worker injured as crane falls over

Another crane incident has put a worker in a bad state.

One Alberta worker suffered serious injuries after a crane fell over at the workplace.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning at a construction site in Montgomery.

Fire crews were called at around 11 a.m to take site, located at 4900 block of 22 Avenue Northwest, the Calgary Fire Department noted, according to reports from Global News and CTV News.

Reports did not detail the identity of the workers, but said that the injured party is a male.

The worker was assessed by Alberta Health Services EMS crews, and was sent to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The machine involved in the incident was a telescopic handler, according to CTV News.

A video from Global News shows the crane on its side after it fell over.

A series of incidents involving cranes

There has been a series of incidents in Canada that have involved cranes the past few weeks.

Just last week, a crane dropped its load onto a building under construction in Vancuover's Oakridge neighbourhood in British Columbia, and one person died. The funding campaign launched to help bring home the body of the construction worker who died from that incident surpassed its target.

Also, in late January, two separate crane incidents occurred in Metro Vancouver within a week of each other.

Recently, the Kelowna RCMP Serious Crime Unit has concluded its investigation into the Kelowna crane collapse in 2021, and recommended criminal negligence charges.

Chris Vilness, father of Cailen who was one of the victims, voiced grave concerns about the adequacy of training provided to workers. "In less than an hour, Cailen got training before he went out there to dismantle the crane. Who is responsible to decide he was competent enough to be doing that job?” questioned Vilness.

One union has called for comprehensive training programs and stricter regulations for crane operators and workers engaged in tower crane operations across British Columbia.a
