A worker has died following an incident at a Hamilton waste transfer facility that involved heavy equipment, according to a report.

Hamilton police said emergency crews were called to the Strathearne Avenue site at about 4:20 p.m. on Monday for reports that an employee had been hit by machinery, CTV News reported.

First responders found a 48-year-old man with life-threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital for treatment but later died, according to the publication. The worker’s identity has not been released.

In a written statement, Hamilton police said “the incident involved a commercial vehicle and heavy equipment operating at the site,” as reported by CTV News.

No information has been made public about the employer, the configuration of the work area or the specific type of equipment involved in the incident. Authorities have also not disclosed what tasks were being performed at the time.

Police said the Ministry of Labour has been notified and is now involved in the case. The ministry is assisting Hamilton police with the workplace investigation at the waste transfer facility.

“The Ministry of Labour has been notified and is assisting with the investigation. The Office of the Chief Coroner is also involved and has ordered a post-mortem examination,” police said in the news release, according to CTV News.

Hamilton police said the investigation is “ongoing,” and no further details are being released at this time.
