A worker in his 30’s died late last week in hospital after a fire at a hazardous waste facility in the Port Weller area of St. Catharines, Ontario.

The fire broke out Thursday morning at Ssonix Products, and local media reports the intersection of Keefer Road and Seaway Haulage Road is still closed while fire investigation and hazmat mitigation continue.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area.

The Toronto Star reports the worker was alone at the time of the incident. He suffered serious burns, and was transported to hospital, where he passed away.

St. Catharine Fire Services Chief Dave Upper told the publication he anticipates the investigation will take up to 10 days before the site is released.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall is also investigating.
