mine operations halted 'until the accident has been fully investigated'
A contract worker has died following an accident at Taseko Mines Limited's Gibraltar copper mine northeast of Williams Lake, British Columbia.
The accident occurred in an active mining area.
The worker was discovered at approximately 5 p.m. Friday, Taseko noted in a press release.
The company suspended all operations at the copper mine.
The accident site has been secured and mining activity halted while an investigation is underway, with personnel from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the B.C. Coroners Service now conducting their examination of the circumstances, according to the employer. The B.C. Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals has also been notified of the incident.
“We are saddened to report the loss of a valued colleague at Gibraltar, and offer our deepest condolences to affected family, co-workers and friends,” said Taseko Vice President of Corporate Affairs Sean Magee.
“Our primary concern is the health, safety and well-being of our employees. Accordingly, we have halted all activity at Gibraltar until the accident has been fully investigated, and will make counselling and support services available to Gibraltar employees affected by this tragic event.”
