Issue stemmed from payment for bacon
A Vancouver fast‑food worker suffered a serious facial injury after being punched by a customer who allegedly became violent when told he would have to pay extra for bacon, according to Vancouver Police.
The assault took place on the evening of Jan. 12 at a fast‑food restaurant on Granville Street. Police said a 23‑year‑old employee was working when a customer requested free bacon on his burger.
When told there would be a charge, the customer allegedly went behind the counter into the kitchen area and punched the cook in the face.
“The worker sustained a serious facial injury that required medical attention,” police said in a news release.
The suspect fled the restaurant, but another staff member chased after him. Members of the Vancouver Police Metro Team, who were already responding to another incident nearby, were able to quickly arrest the man.
The BC Prosecution Service has approved one charge of assault causing bodily harm against 24‑year‑old Jaxon Andre Carter.
No further details have been released.
Statistics Canada has looked at workplace violence using the General Social Survey (GSS) on victimization. In its classic analysis, Violence in the workplace, StatCan reported that in 2004 there were about 356,000 violent workplace incidents (physical assault, sexual assault and robbery) in the 10 provinces.
Among those victims, 14% worked in accommodation or food services, equivalent to about 50,000 workers.
