Louisiana-Pacific Canada fined $46,000 for worker injury

Louisiana-Pacific Canada has been fined $42,500 plus an additional $3,500 payable to Manitoba’s Workplace Safety and Health to be used for the purpose of educating the public on matters relating to workplace health and safety.

On Aug. 22, 2016, a Minitonas, Man.-based Louisiana-Pacific Canada worker was assisting in the coupling and uncoupling of rail cars. The task was not a part of the worker’s regular duties. When the rail cars came to a stop the worker stood on the coupler assembly. The coupler assembly continued to retract pinching the worker’s feet, resulting in serious injuries.

On Dec. 16, 2019, Louisiana-Pacific Canada pleaded guilty to section 4(4)(c) of the Workplace Safety and Health Act C.C.S.M. c. W210 to the charge of failing to provide information, instruction and training to a worker to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the safety and health of the worker before the worker was moved to another area of the workplace or a different workplace that had different facilities, procedures or hazards.
