Saskatchewan fines Ottawa employer $935K for two workplace injuries

EVRAZ INC. NA Canada of Ottawa was fined a total of $935,000 after pleading guilty to two incidents in the workplace that resulted in injuries to two workers.

The company was fined $257,142.14 with a $102,857.86 surcharge, for a total of $360,000, for an incident that took place on Jan. 24, 2019.

That day, a worker was rolling a pipe at the EVRAZ plant in Regina, Sask. The worker slipped on ice and snow which lead the individual to be pinned between the pipe and a steel plate of a conveyor, resulting in serious injuries.

“The company pleaded guilty to contravening clause 12(a) of the regulations (being an employer, fail to provide and maintain plant, systems of work and working environments that ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of the employer's workers, resulting in the serious injury to a worker),” according to the Saskatchewan government.

EVRAZ was also fined $410,714.29 with a $164,285.71 surcharge, for a total of $575,000, for an incident that took place on Feb. 6, 2019 at the same worksite.

While a worker was attempting to put out a grease fire on a machine, it moved, causing a serious injury to the individual.

The company pleaded guilty of contravening clause 137(1)(a) of the regulations, or, being an employer, failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine, resulting in a serious injury to a worker.

One other charge was withdrawn in the incident.

Previously, Saskatchewan company Alsport Sales Inc. was fined $35,000 after one worker was fatally injured after being thrown from a snowmobile.

Saskatchewan company Inland Steel Products Inc. was also fined $90,000 with a $36,000 surcharge after pleading guilty to one count under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 for an incident that caused the death of one worker.
