As COVID hopefully starts to decline and businesses are once again able to reopen, labour shortages nevertheless continue in Canada.

According to Avetta, over 40 per cent of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses face increasing difficulty in hiring new employees.

More than half (58 per cent) of large organizations in Canada reported talent shortages this year.

“Once the pandemic hit, like with most countries, unemployment skyrocketed. Canadians under the age of 35 were among the hardest hit by the wave of job losses in the spring of 2020,” says Avetta in its new whitepaper.

In addition, Avetta explains that some sectors were even struggling pre-pandemic to find qualified workers, with shortages only exacerbated by a pandemic-induced spike in demand for some products and services. These sectors include construction, manufacturing and retail trade.

And in this current climate, employees – notably those on the front line – fear the health risks of being exposed to COVID and in addition, amid businesses and schools closing, there is a lack of childcare options for parents.

Avetta says that “addressing these problems quickly is important because the lack of qualified workers is impeding growth and limiting manufacturers’ ability to innovate and invest in technology which it will need to serve future needs and keep up with competitors.”

To combat labour shortages, there are a numbers of things that organizations can do, including increasing the efficiency of the recruitment process, adapting employees to alternate skills or investing in upskilling to help workers “acquire specific skillsets,” which will “help match the ever-expanding list of complications and requirements of SCM.”
