5 requirements issued after worker killed at St. Mary's Cement Inc

We’re learning more about the circumstances surrounding the death of a worker at St. Mary’s Cement Inc last week in Bowmanville, Ontario.

On Tuesday March 21, the worker was fatally injured when they were struck and pinned by a piece of machinery, according to a statement sent to Canadian Occupational Safety by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

“Our sincere condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of the deceased,” reads the statement.

The constructor is St. Mary’s Cement and the employer is Trade-Mark Industrial inc. The ministry issued four requirements to St. Mary’s and one requirement to Trade-Mark Industrial.

Two ministry inspectors were assigned to the case and the investigation is ongoing.

St. Mary’s issued a statement to local media shortly after the incident.

“First and foremost, our deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends and coworkers of the individual. We are working with Ministry of Labour inspectors as an investigation into the incident is underway. Out of respect for the worker, their family and their employer, the company is not disclosing any additional details at this time.”

St. Mary’s Cement was fined $165,000 for a workplace accident in 2019 that left one worker critically injured.
