Ministry issues requirements after carbon monoxide leak

Fieldgate Construction Management Ltd., the employer, and Metro Concrete Floors (1990) Inc., the constructor, have been issued requirements by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD) following a carbon monoxide leak incident that sent seven construction workers to hospital on Tuesday.

The incident happened at a construction site located in North York, Toronto. The injured workers were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Paramedics initially said only six workers needed treatment, but later confirmed seven were exposed to carbon monoxide. One of the workers suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the other six have minor injuries.

Police said there appeared to be “ventilation issues with exhaust from machinery.”

A ministry inspector and hygienist were promptly dispatched to the project site to investigate the matter. Two requirements were issued to the constructor, Fieldgate Construction Management and one requirement was issue to the employer, Metro Concrete Floors. The specific details of the requirements issued have not been disclosed at this time.

The ministry's requirements are intended to address and rectify any safety issues or shortcomings that may have contributed to the carbon monoxide leak.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can prove to be extremely dangerous, even fatal, when inhaled in high concentrations.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining proper ventilation systems and conducting regular safety checks within construction sites to prevent such accidents from occurring.
