System was restricted with debris, resulting in hazardous levels of carbon monoxide and hardwood dust
Louisiana-Pacific Canada (Peace Valley OSB Division) has been fined $164,480 by WorkSafeBC.
WorkSafeBC conducted a series of inspections at this firm's wood products manufacturing plant in Fort St. John. Testing determined that many of the lines in the plant's ventilation system were restricted with debris and the system was not operating as designed by the manufacturer, resulting in hazardous levels of carbon monoxide and hardwood dust in the plant.
The firm failed to implement an exposure control plan to maintain workers' exposure to hazardous materials as low as reasonably achievable, a repeated violation.
The firm also failed to regularly inspect and monitor its ventilation system to ensure its effectiveness.
Furthermore, the firm failed to ensure the health and safety of all workers at the workplace, and failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety.
These were all high-risk violations.
