Why a CSC adds value to the job site

Designation encourages individuals to play a key role in effective OHS management

Why a CSC adds value to the job site

The Construction Safety Coordinator (CSC) designation has been designed specifically for individuals working in the construction industry in New Brunswick. It is a health and safety designation program which the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE) says helps develop and enhance OHS training and auditing skills.

“The program’s primary goal is to expose the participant to the fundamentals of construction safety management and build upon personal field experience,” says the CSSE.

So what exactly does a CSC do? They act as an OHS resource for the company, and provide support to employers in the implementation and maintenance of an organization’s health and safety program. The CSSE also says that “successful participants can play a key leadership role in effective health and safety management.”

As with other safety designations or certifications, not just anyone can apply. Those wishing to access the designation must have at least three years of field experience in Canada in the construction industry within the last 10 years. Applicants must also provide a number of other documents, such as proof of up to date training (including first aid), proof of participation in inspections, etc. There are also nine compulsory courses to pass, and three electives.

The New Brunswick Construction Safety Association (NBCSA) says that the program provides recognition and verification of skill at a provincial level. What does this mean? Well, if you want to work in New Brunswick for example, you need to get your CSC designation in the province. If you plan on working in another province, you may want to aim for another designation – National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) perhaps.

The NBCSA says that the CSC can also be used as a stepping stone to gain national recognition through the NCSO program.

And what exactly is the difference between an NCSO/CSO and a CSC? The CSC is a relatively accessible designation (and there is no certification maintenance program specified) though it is limited to the provincial level. The role of Construction Safety Officer (CSO) seems to be more common in other provinces which may lead to confusion between the roles of CSC and CSO (which have many similarities). Nevertheless, any certification or designation earned by an individual in the health and safety sector is always a plus.
