A metal worker died from injuries sustained while “working with heavy equipment” in a warehouse in Toronto, according to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

The industrial accident happened at Norbel Metal Service near Steeles Avenue West and Martin Grove Road in the city’s Northwest early Monday morning.

The Toronto Star reports fire services arrived at the scene shortly before 8:30 a.m. and found the worker without vital signs. The person appeared to have suffered a severe crushing injury.

Toronto Paramedics performed CPR and then transported the worker to hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

There are many hazards in the manufacturing sector- including those posed by heavy machinery. But technology is helping mitigate those hazards.

Norbel Metal Service describes itself as a family-owned business first established in 1967. It has 140,000 square foot warehouse, which is where the accident is believed to have taken place.  The plant has 3 slitters, 4 cut-to-length lines and 12 shears.
