N.L. Hydro, supervisor charged in connection with 2023 Holyrood workplace fatality

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and one of its supervisors are facing a total of 10 occupational health and safety charges, according to a report.

The charges are related to the death of an employee at the Holyrood Thermal Generating Station in 2023, CBC reported.

The incident occurred in August 2023.

Local news outlet VOCM reported that it received information indicating the victim was a man in his 60s who was a long-time employee of the Crown corporation. It also reported that the worker died after coming into contact with electricity in the switchyard area.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to an emergency call. Tragically, the injured man succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

The Crown corporation has been charged with nine violations of occupational health and safety legislation, including failure to provide and maintain a safe workplace, as well as the necessary equipment, systems, and tools to protect workers. In addition, a supervisor is charged with failing to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all workers under their supervision, according to a statement from the provincial government.

N.L. Hydro stated it fully co-operated with the Department of Government Modernization and Service Delivery’s investigation. “The safety of our employees and contractors remains Hydro’s highest priority,” the company said in a statement posted to its website.

The company and the supervisor are scheduled to appear in provincial court on Aug. 21, according to CBC.
