Recognizing exceptional mental health support in the workplace

In a time when employee well-being is of utmost importance, the COS 5-Star Psychological Safety Awards have recognized Canadian companies that are setting the standard for addressing mental health issues in the workplace. These awards celebrate organizations that have gone above and beyond to ensure the psychological safety of their employees, fostering an environment where individuals can thrive both personally and professionally.

The COS 5-Star Psychological Safety Awards highlight the outstanding efforts of companies across Canada in promoting psychological well-being among their workforce. The nominees have demonstrated impressive commitment and success, as indicated by feedback from their employees:

  • 75% of the nominated companies provide annual training in programs and policies related to psychological safety.
  • An impressive 94% of employees view respectful conflicts between colleagues as opportunities for teaching and learning.
  • 61% of the companies offer emotional intelligence training to their staff.

"Psychological safety is the employee's capacity to show up authentically, push back, ask questions, make mistakes, and seek support without fear of negative consequences," says Shanna Tiayon, the founder and CEO of Yes Wellbeing Works. It is this commitment to creating an environment where individuals can thrive that has earned these companies their prestigious 5-Star status.

Linda Crockett, the founder of The Canadian Institute of Workplace Bullying Resources, highlights the fundamental elements of a 5-Star program, including trauma-informed training, ensuring that leaders and board members are also trained, and fostering open discussions within the organization. Furthermore, providing trauma-informed qualified services in case of incidents is crucial to ensuring employee well-being.

"Finally, they must demonstrate zero tolerance of any psychological hazard by following their own policies and procedures consistently,” explains Crockett. “Employees need to feel valued and safe, and they will when the previous points are met."
