A 23-year-old man in Manitoba has been arrested after allegedly assaulting Winnipeg Transit workers, according to police.

The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Two Winnipeg Transit supervisors were checking on the well-being of a man aboard a bus in the area of Fort Street and Graham Avenue.

The supervisors boarded the bus to check on Diego Porteous-Jelder, who was asleep, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.

“Once awake, the man became agitated and assaulted both supervisors,” police said.

“Central District patrol officers arrived to find the suspect still struggling with the Transit Supervisors and took him into custody.”

One transit supervisor sustained minor injuries but did not require medical treatment, police added.

Porteous-Jelder has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer and remains in custody.

“Transit supervisors are designated as special constables and carry the powers and protections of a peace officer while performing their duties under section 80 of the Police Services Act,” the Winnipeg police stated.
