TSB says safety procedures 'played a crucial role' during fire

A Newfoundland and Labrador fishing crew survived days adrift in a life raft after their vessel caught fire and sank, thanks to their adherence to strong safety protocols, according to a recent investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB).
The incident occurred on July 17, 2024, when the fishing vessel Elite Navigator, carrying a crew of seven, was operating about 130 nautical miles east-northeast of Fogo Island. A fire broke out in the engine room, quickly spreading and forcing the crew to abandon ship. They managed to deploy and board a life raft, where they spent several days before being rescued by a nearby vessel.
In its investigation report, the TSB concluded that the crew's commitment to safety procedures was crucial to their survival. "The crew's compliance with safety procedures, including the proper use of life-saving equipment, played a crucial role in ensuring their safety during the abandonment and subsequent rescue," the TSB stated.
Fire origin and safety measures
The TSB investigation found that the fire originated in the engine room, though the exact cause remains unclear. The report emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and inspection to help prevent similar incidents. "Routine checks and adherence to maintenance schedules are vital in mitigating the risk of onboard fires," the TSB noted.
Despite the loss of the vessel, the report praised the crew for their preparedness. They had regularly conducted safety drills, ensuring they knew how to respond in an emergency. This level of preparedness was a key factor in their survival.
Lessons for the fishing industry
This incident highlights the critical importance of safety training and emergency preparedness in the fishing industry, which remains one of the most hazardous professions in Canada. The TSB’s findings reinforce the need for ongoing safety training, proper equipment maintenance, and adherence to emergency procedures to protect crew members in life-threatening situations.
The Elite Navigator’s crew was eventually rescued without loss of life, a rare outcome in maritime emergencies of this nature. The investigation serves as a reminder of how strict safety protocols and quick decision-making can mean the difference between survival and tragedy at sea.
