Gas station attendant seriously injured in alleged gas‑and‑dash

A gas station attendant is in hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle during an alleged gas‑and‑dash at a rural Ontario station.

The collision happened on May 13 in the village of Mansfield, near Orangeville.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a driver in a black Ford SUV towing a camper trailer allegedly filled up at the station and then tried to leave without paying. According to CTV News, the attendant attempted to intervene as the vehicle was leaving and was hit.

The worker was airlifted to a Toronto‑area hospital with serious injuries and is now in stable condition, police say. The identity of the victim has not been released. The collision prompted a wider investigation involving multiple OPP units.

Arrest and charges

Police say the driver fled the scene immediately after the incident at the gas station. The next day, OPP officers located a suspect, along with the SUV and attached trailer believed to have been involved.

According to police, officers deployed a spike belt to disable the vehicle when they attempted a traffic stop. They say the suspect then ran into a nearby wooded area on foot, leading to an extensive search of the surrounding area.

OPP later arrested a man and took him into custody. CTV News identified the accused as 53‑year‑old Darbara Singh of Brampton, who faces multiple charges, including two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft, dangerous operation causing bodily harm and failing to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm. None of the allegations have been tested in court.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant information or video from the area around the time of the collision, to contact the OPP.
