Cause of structural failure still unknown
Three construction workers were taken to hospital Tuesday morning after a porch under construction at a home in Stoney Creek, Ont. collapsed and trapped them underneath, according to a report.
Hamilton police said emergency crews were called to a residential building site on Green Mountain Road, between Fifth Road East and Sixth Road East, shortly before 9 a.m., CTV News report. The partially built porch at the front of the home reportedly gave way, pinning three adult male workers below the debris, according to the report..
One of the men sustained a serious leg injury, while the other two suffered injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. The workers’ names and the identity of the employer have not been released.
Emergency response
In a statement provided to CP24 and cited by CTV News, police said, “Hamilton Police, Hamilton Fire Department and Hamilton Paramedic Service attended the scene. All three individuals were extricated and transported to hospital.”
Green Mountain Road was closed for a period on Tuesday to allow first responders and investigators to access the site safely. The road has since reopened, CTV News reported.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown. It is not yet clear whether any structural, design or construction issues contributed to the failure of the porch, which was attached to a home still under construction.
Ontario’s Ministry of Labour has been notified and will be investigating the incident, CTV News said. The ministry’s probe would typically include a review of work practices, site conditions and compliance with provincial health and safety requirements on construction projects.
No further details about the condition of the injured workers or possible enforcement action had been released as of publication time.
