Worker was fatally injured while at sea
Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour and the province’s medical examiner are investigating after a fisherman died on a vessel off Cape Breton last week.
The incident happened on April 23 in waters off St. Peter’s, N.S., CBC News reported.
“A worker was fatally injured while on board a fishing boat off St. Peter's,” department said, according to the report.
Richmond County RCMP told the publication that they were called after the incident was reported at about 1:30 p.m. on April 23. The RCMP said further questions should be directed to the Labour Department.
'No further details' available
Both the Department of Labour and the RCMP have stated that “no other details are being released at this time.” The agencies have not released the worker’s identity, the name of the vessel, the type of fishery involved or any information about how the injury occurred.
The Labour Department has not yet indicated whether any compliance orders or enforcement actions will result from the investigation. No information has been released about possible contributing factors, including working conditions, equipment, weather or emergency response on board.
The fatality occurred in one of Atlantic Canada’s highest‑risk industries, where fish harvesters routinely work in challenging marine conditions and remote locations.
