Fatality renews focus on machinery hazards
A 41-year-old construction worker has died after being run over by a gravel truck at a Saskatoon jobsite.
The incident occurred August 5 at a construction site in the 3000 block of Meadows Parkway. Saskatoon police were called to the site shortly before 2 p.m. and said the worker had been struck by a piece of heavy equipment. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A fatality notice published by WorkSafe Saskatchewan the following day provided further detail, saying the worker had been run over by a gravel truck.
The Saskatoon Police Service and Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety are investigating the incident. Authorities have not released further information about the circumstances leading up to the worker being struck.
The death comes as Saskatchewan continues to focus on construction and machinery-related risks under its 2023–2028 Fatalities and Serious Injuries Strategy. Construction is one of three high-risk sectors identified by the province, alongside health care and transportation, while machinery safety is among the workplace hazards targeted for prevention efforts.
Saskatchewan recorded 27 workplace fatalities in 2025, according to the Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board, unchanged from the previous year. Sixteen resulted from traumatic incidents, including seven involving equipment contact or drowning.
The WCB also reported that construction's total injury rate fell by 3% in 2025. Despite that decline, the sector remains a focus of provincial efforts to reduce serious injuries and workplace fatalities.
