Awards honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contributions to fire safety

Northwest Territories’ Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) is seeking nominations for the NWT Fire Service Merit Awards.

Community members can nominate fire safety workers and community fire departments for the awards to honour and recognize their significant contributions to fire safety and fire service in communities across the Northwest Territories.

The deadline for nominations is Nov. 20, 2020.

Previously, the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA), the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) and the Canadian Propane Association warned that patio heaters can pose a danger if they are not installed, operated and maintained correctly.

In August, the Calgary Fire Department in Alberta issued a reminder for employers wanting to conduct fire drills.

“During the pandemic, it would be acceptable for fire drills to be conducted with supervisory personnel present, taking into consideration social distancing to complete any fire warden training which may include an evacuation table top exercise,” said the department in a memo released addressing their expectations amid the pandemic.

In July 2017, an Ottawa roofing company was installing a roof on a two-storey house. Three workers were on the home’s balcony when adhesive glue, a flammable liquid, caught fire.
