Being a leader is tough, especially during these current trying times.

Navigating good leadership can be confusing, but COS is here to help.

Join in the inaugural edition of Safety Leaders Summit Canada on June 22 to find out how to build – and lead – an effective safety culture.

The virtual event will take place all day from 10.10am ET and will feature a host of top notch OHS leaders sharing their expertise on some of the sector’s hot button topics.

The virtual event will also have plenty of networking opportunities. Don’t miss out!

COS recently spoke with Stewart Day, Health & Safety Director, Mobilinx. Day will be one of the speakers on our closing panel, ‘integrating a radical safety culture from the top-down’.

Day shared his view on what makes a great safety leader.

“To me, a great safety leader is someone who is willing to dive into a business and get to know every aspect of it,” says Day.

He explains that a great safety leader is someone who recognizes that safety isn’t just about one department, it’s about building relationships with other departments and bringing them together to find the best approach to safety.

Through sharing resources, “ultimately your message becomes stronger and is carried forward by others,” says Day.

The pandemic has also largely affected OHS within businesses and organizations, though the unprecedented nature of the virus has put a huge strain on safety professionals, the silver lining is that safety is getting its time to shine.

“Organizations have realized that through safety, or at least well done safety, there are efficiencies to be gained,” says Day. “Everyone has a role to play […] it’s helped encourage people to speak up more.”

Day also highlights how important tech is for his organization and for OHS, and how important coaching and mentorship is to achieve safety excellence.

Lastly, he says that another good thing to come out of the pandemic is a sharper focus on the importance of mental health.
