CCOHS launches new fatigue prevention course for seafarers

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Safety (CCOHS) – in partnership with Transport Canada – has launched a free online course to help marine industry workers mitigate the risks associated with fatigue at sea.

Called Fatigue Management at Sea, the course notes that the risk of fatigue is key to understanding how to prevent it.

“Workplace fatigue can be considered a form of impairment, making it a workplace hazard. We need to make sure we’re raising awareness and providing resources to help prevent the risks associated with fatigue in all workplaces,” Anne Tennier, president and CEO, CCOHS.

The one-hour course explains what fatigue is, how to avoid it, and how to reduce its effects. Topics covered in the course include:

  • Life at sea
  • Overview of fatigue
  • Causes and effects of fatigue
  • Laws and regulations to reduce fatigue risk
  • Management practices to reduce risk
  • Personal strategies to reduce risk

CCOHS developed the Fatigue Management at Sea course to help inform participants about the hazards of fatigue and to support those working in the industry in the implementation of effective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of seafarers.

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Define fatigue and learn how it develops
  • Recognize the causes and effects of fatigue
  • Identify the responsibilities of vessel owners and management, masters, and seafarers to reduce the risk of fatigue
  • Recall personal strategies to reduce the risk of fatigue

The course is provided for free by Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security to registered Canadian seafarers, with a valid Candidate Document Number (CDN).

It’s available in both English and French.

It’s also available to the public for $19.95.
