Firm charged after excavator struck high-voltage power ducts

Performance Contracting fined $17K by WorkSafeBC

Performance Contracting of Richmond, B.C. has been fined $17,381.

This firm was excavating a trench for the installation of a water line. During this work, an excavator struck and damaged two energized high-voltage power ducts.

WorkSafeBC attended the scene and determined that the ducts had been damaged and insufficiently repaired, and had remained energized at the time of the incident.

The firm failed to inform its workers of the existence and location of high-voltage electrical conductors, and failed to ensure work procedures complied with regulatory requirements. This was a high-risk violation.
