North West Company fined $35,000 for N.W.T. incident

Workers were not trained on hazardous substances

The North West Company has been sentenced to fines totalling $35,000, which is paid to the Workers’ Protection Fund, for offences under the Northwest Territories’ Safety Act. In addition, a 15 per cent victim fine surcharges was imposed.

 

The North West Company failed to provide information, instruction, training and supervision that is necessary to protect the health and safety of workers by not ensuring that workers performing repairs on a work site were trained in appropriate hazard assessment and safe work procedures for hazardous substances including asbestos and mould.

 

The company also failed to identify and keep a written record of materials that the employer knew or could reasonably be expected to know were present at the work site.
