Confined space, driver safety and HSE technology all took top honours in this year's nationwide reader survey
Canadian Occupational Safety has released the results of its 11th annual Readers' Choice Awards for Best Safety Suppliers, recognizing this year's top-rated vendors across categories ranging from confined space gas detection to safe driving training, following a nationwide reader survey conducted between May 11 and June 5, 2026.
The results land against a sober backdrop. Canadian workers' compensation boards recorded 1,042 work-related deaths in 2024, according to the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada, with seven of 11 jurisdictions posting injury fatality rates above the 2021–23 average.
Among this year's honourees, Gas Clip Technologies took the confined space gas detection category on the strength of its battery life. "Our biggest differentiator is our battery life," said Casey Lewis, who leads customer-facing work at the manufacturer, pointing to a two-to-three-year runtime against a roughly 25-hour rating on a typical competitor four-gas unit.
BIS Safety Software topped HSE management technology with a voice-driven hazard assessment tool built for workers wearing gloves in cold conditions. Chief executive officer Dan MacDonald said the shift toward AI integration across the company's platform has been sweeping. "Everything's got to be changed. We can't do the old way anymore, that's gone," he said, estimating the tool saves more than 70 per cent of form-completion time on a typical worksite.
Value should outweigh price, procurement expert says
Sabesh Kanagaretnam, president and co-founder of 4S Consulting Services, told COS researchers that distinguishing genuine value from low upfront cost remains one of the biggest sourcing challenges Canadian employers face. "A lower-cost solution that creates additional work or does not fit the organization's needs can ultimately be far more expensive than a solution with a higher initial price that delivers sustained value," he said.
