Worker dies after being trapped beneath an excavator

A 42-year-old contract worker has died after being trapped beneath an excavator at a residential work site in Ontario.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene on Dominion Drive in Hanmer shortly after 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Greater Sudbury Police, following reports of a workplace incident involving heavy equipment.

“Unfortunately, the 42-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Greater Sudbury Police said in a statement. The individual’s name is not being released “out of respect for his family’s wishes,” police added. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.”

Members of the Integrated Traffic Safety Unit and Criminal Investigation Division are working in collaboration with the Coroner’s Office and the Ministry of Labour, as the incident is being treated as a workplace fatality.

“The investigation into the incident is ongoing,” police stated.
