STUDSON Arc Flash Face Shield Achieves 20 cal/cm² Arc Rating

SHK-1 Class E Full Brim Helmet with integrated Arc Flash Face Shield independently tested

STUDSON Arc Flash Face Shield Achieves 20 cal/cm² Arc Rating

Safety helmet manufacturer STUDSON announced that its SHK-1 Class E Full Brim Helmet with integrated Arc Flash Face Shield has achieved an Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) of 20 cal/cm², verified through testing to ASTM F2178/F2178M-23a standards.

The face shield, developed in collaboration with Paulson Manufacturing, demonstrated no ignition, afterflame, melting, or dripping during front-facing arc flash testing. The results exceed the lens’s original 12 cal/cm² rating, highlighting the enhanced protection of the integrated helmet and shield system.

Testing was conducted in August 2025 by Kinectrics Inc., an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab based in Toronto. The assembly’s performance positions it as a viable PPE option for electrical and utility workers exposed to arc flash hazards.

The Arc Flash Face Shield includes STUDSON’s LeverLock™ Attachment System for ease of replacement and is designed for exclusive use with the SHK-1 helmet. The 20 cal/cm² rating applies only when used as part of a complete arc-rated PPE system, and the standard evaluates front-facing thermal protection only.
