Air Liquide fined $100,000 after worker was injured by forklift

Air Liquide Canada Inc. has been fined a total of $100,000 after a worker was seriously injured in a forklift incident near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

In Saskatoon Provincial Court on 10 February 2026, the company pleaded guilty to one violation of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020, the Saskatchewan government said in a news release issued 24 February.

According to the province, “Air Liquide Canada Inc. pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court to a violation of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020.”

Violation of traffic control plan requirements

The conviction relates to subsection 9‑22(6) of the regulations for “being an employer at a place of employment, fail to develop and implement a traffic control plan to protect the worker from traffic hazards, resulting in a serious injury of a worker.” One additional charge was withdrawn.

The charges arose from a June 21, 2023 incident near Saskatoon in which a worker was seriously injured after being hit by a forklift, the government said.

The court imposed a fine of $71,428.57 and a victim fine surcharge of $28,571.43, for a total financial penalty of $100,000.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety said it “works with employers and workers to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses through education, intervention and enforcement.”

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOSH) reminds forklift operators that they must “look ahead for any obstructions or restrictions that might be in the path” they are to travel. These may include:

  • slippery floors
  • items in the path
  • weight restrictions for floors, dock or bridge plates
  • elevators
