Worker seriously hurt while using a computer numerical control lathe to do finishing polishing work

Alberta employer Steelhaus Technologies Inc. has been fined $125,000 after one of its workers sustained serious injuries in the workplace.
The incident happened at the company’s Calgary manufacturing facility on May 27, 2023, according to a CityNews report.
The worker was seriously hurt while using a computer numerical control lathe to do finishing polishing work.
Steelhaus Technologies pleaded guilty in a Calgary court room on July 30 to one count of failing to provide safeguards if a worker could come into contact with moving parts of equipment or machinery under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code, according to the report.
The company was fined $125,000 including a 20 per cent victim fine surcharge. The Crown withdrew eight other counts.
The employer has a month to appeal the conviction or the penalties.
