Alberta launches campaign to improve workplace safety

Is it ever too hot or too cold to work outside? How many hours do you work before you are owed overtime? The Government of Alberta has launched a new campaign, Work Right, that poses questions like these and invites employers and workers to find out more about workplace rules.
“Our goal through this campaign is to instill a culture of compliance in the workplace, where fairness and safety are the norm. To do this we are encouraging workers and employers to question what they know about occupational health and safety and employment standards,” said Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour Thomas Lukaszuk.

Highlights of the Work Right campaign:

• interactive website with questions, answers and links to more in-depth information
• downloadable products
• media and social media support.

Campaign research indicates that while employers and workers both believe they have a good grasp of existing workplace rules, they often don’t. Work Right encourages workers and employers to ask questions if they are not sure of their rights and responsibilities, and to find out more about rules that apply to them, said the provincial government.

Individuals with questions or concerns about workplace rules can call the occupational health and safety contact centre at 1-866-415-8690 or the employment standards contact centre at 1-877-427-3731.
