Abdelhamid Khiar, Marketing Lead at PIP Canada, says the most common misconception he encounters in the Canadian market is that the highest available performance rating is automatically the best choice for every task.

"A glove or helmet must be balanced," Khiar said. "Cut resistance, dexterity, comfort and durability all matter, and over specifying one attribute can actually reduce compliance and real- world protection. We see this all the time with cut-resistant gloves. A higher rating isn't always the better option if it compromises worker dexterity and all-day comfort" PIP Canada's response, he said, is to lead with the actual application and worker feedback rather than a spec sheet, using wear trials, an interactive product selector and cross reference guides to match the right PPE to the right hazard.

A glove built to stay on

That approach shaped the development of PIP's G-Tek Paradox line of 21-gauge cut resistant gloves Khiar points to as a measurable example of fit driving compliance. "Because it delivers ANSI rated cut protection in a thinner, lighter, touchscreen compatible glove, workers keep it on for tasks where they previously removed bulkier gloves, thus closing the compliance gap where most hand injuries occur," he said. "In field trials across construction and mechanical contractors, end users described the gloves as a game changer, and several standardized on the line after trialing it." Founded in Laval, Quebec, PIP Canada traces its roots to 2008, when industry veteran Claude Roberge founded Dynamic Safety. Dynamic joined forces with Protective Industrial Products, known as PIP Global, in 2020 to form the current PIP Canada. The company has since invested more than one million dollars in robotics and plant upgrades, opened a Western distribution centre in Edmonton, and added brands including Miller, North and Howard Leight through the acquisition of Honeywell's PPE division.

Standards set the floor, not the ceiling

Khiar said standards from organizations such as CSA, ANSI and ISEA set an essential baseline, but proper selection and fit determine whether the PPE can protect the worker as intended. "Certification alone is not a guarantee of protection. The PPE still has to be right for the hazard and fit the worker,” he said. “A certified respirator that does not seal, or a harness that does not fit and sit correctly, may not protect the worker as intended."

The most common shortfall, he said, is defaulting to small, medium and large sizing built around a male frame. "Where organizations most often fall short is defaulting to small, medium, large or unisex sizing that is really built for men, which leaves many workers, women in particular, in ill fitting gear that can itself become a hazard," Khiar said, a pattern also documented in our reporting on why PPE still isn't being made for women. PIP Canada has responded by engineering products specifically for women rather than simply resizing men’s patterns. That same focus on designing PPE around the people and applications it serves extends across industries, including the PIP RZRBack safety helmet, which the company says is the first CSA-certified safety helmet available with Mips rotational-impact protection and is fully designed and manufactured in Canada.

PIP Canada's Laval plant has recorded more than 1,200 days without a lost time injury, and has the capacity to produce up to 3.5 million hard hats annually and produced approximately 2.6 million units in FY26. Khiar said manufacturing in Canada gives PIP's field specialists and product managers a more direct line to that kind of feedback, which shortens the loop between a problem reported on a jobsite and a design change in production. "Because we manufacture in Canada and work directly with our product managers and field specialists, we can engineer solutions tuned to Canadian conditions, standards and feedback," he said.

Where the next compliance gains will come from

Khiar said the conversation among Canadian safety leaders has shifted from simply issuing compliant gear to ensuring it is worn correctly. "Safety leaders increasingly recognize that discomfort and poor fit are important contributors to non-compliance," he said. "If a glove is too bulky or a helmet too hot, workers find reasons not to wear it. We have seen growing demand for lightweight, breathable, higher dexterity products, and for PPE properly sized for a diverse workforce."

Looking ahead, Khiar expects three converging trends: materials innovation using bio based and recycled content, more connected safety equipment such as helmets with integrated medical ID technology, and a sharper regulatory focus on sustainability and fit. "Canadian safety leaders should prepare by building fit testing and inclusive sizing into their programs now, favouring in- region supply for resilience, and partnering with manufacturers who can document both compliance and environmental credentials," he said.
